Just!. After a fairly well attended meeting on January 18th and a little
bit of soul searching, plus supportive messages sent both before and after
the meeting by those who could not attend, it became clear that the consensus
of the membership was that we should continue to campaign in Brentwood,
at least for the foreseeable future. Issues of new nuclear weapons and
the threat of more nuclear power were too pressing for us not to get involved
in them.
We shall therefore be sending letters to the local press, to local schools
and churches alerting them to decisions which the government is about
to make and we shall be running anti-Trident petition stalls in an attempt
to try to reach 500 signatures by the end of March. Please, therefore,
do try to get yours filled and sent to me (I have already had 1 back).
For the next two months our focus is going to be on 4 stall sessions in
the pedestrian precinct near the Abbey ruins, which we shall run on the
following Saturdays:
February 11th 11-12.30
February 18th 11-12.30
March 4th 11-12.30
March 18th 11-12.30
We shall be leafleting the public and trying to persuade them to sign
the Trident petition. We shall have a minimum of 5 members at each of
these stalls, but we could do with more, especially on February 11th when
we are inviting the press – so please think about supporting us,
even if it’s for just a short time. The petition is a way of raising
the issue in people’s minds and increasing awareness of the government’s
plans regarding nuclear weapons.
CND will be presenting the petition to Downing Street early in April –
thus the concentration on the next 2 months. Our hope is that by organising
this fairly high profile activity we shall be able to attract new (and
maybe younger!) members which will then enable us to be more active in
the community.
Please give whatever support you can to this and please now pay your 2006
subscription.
Now that we are going to revive our campaigning we are going to need your
money. As it is the beginning of the year, unless you pay by standing
order you must owe us your sub. Please, please, please pay these straightaway
and send them to Jill Dimmock, 26 Mascalls Gardens, Brentwood CM14 5LT.
£2.50/£1.00 (concessions) for individuals
£5.00/£2.00 (concessions) for families
At some point in the year, if we haven’t heard from you we shall
assume you have left. This is to ensure that we have an accurate idea
of the size of our group and are not working with grossly inflated figures.
